Miss Griffin's Pick: Julie of the Wolves

Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George (F Geo)

AR book level:  5.8
AR points:  6.0

This 1973 Newberry Medal Winner is a harrowing story about an eskimo girl lost and alone in the arctic wilderness.  Her survival depends on her ability to "talk" to a pack of wolves that live nearby.  There is also an element of mystery to the story, because the reader learns Julie ran away from home, but the book doesn't say why right away.  A touching and exciting read, especially for animal lovers.

Sequels:  Julie (F Geo) and Julie's Wolf Pack (F Geo)

Other great adventure/survival stories:  Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (F Pau), My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George (F Geo), the Everest trilogy by Gordon Korman (F Kor)

Welcome!

Good morning all, and welcome to the Overbrook library blog!  My goal with this blog is to keep parents and students abreast of the latest happenings in the library.

To me, the library is a very special place, a place of peace and calm.  I picked three words to describe what students can do in the library this year:  Read.  Explore.  Discover.  The library is where students can learn all kinds of amazing facts about the world, but also meet unforgettable characters, spark the imagination, and learn about themselves.  I've tried to create a warm space in which all students feel welcome.

Anyway, on to some important updates!  I've added a homepage to our Overbrook catalog with some book lists, links to award winners, and Accelerated Reader resources.  Be sure to take a look!

Have a fun and safe Christmas break!
